Group is anterior

Debashish Banerji in his Auroville Today Interview (February 2010) avers, “Often people pin their sense of self on a group identity.” But the truth is the other way round. A person takes birth into a group, and he simply migrates from one group to another according to his circumstances. Since there can be no fixed normative paradigm in the lived reality, a person’s evolution (not necessarily spiritual) is a unique congealment which also holds a key to the collective destiny.
Banerji misses the flaw in his argument that he is privileging one set of group characteristics against another that he detests. For instance, his current ideas derive from the group that he is clinging to. Such subjective proclivity, therefore, can hardly do the duty for sound theory. [TNM]
