Arya and Hindu

In a Kathak Seminar yesterday at IIC, a dancer recounted how coming from a Arya Samaji family and not being conversant with mythological episodes used to be a severe drawback for her as a learner to relate to dance lessons. This, it struck me, is within the supposedly Hindu territory and one can imagine complexities involved in a multi-religious scenario. The role of the secular State here is highly challenging especially as a guardian of fading cultural assets. Religion viewed from the political/economic angle and from the cultural/aesthetic are two different things. The anachronistic aspect of religion reinforced through myriad symbols and subtexts, however, can't be condoned. [TNM55]
