Sin, wickedness, and Ignorance

Unity is the most challenging concept in the Ontology of Sri Aurobindo as he insists on "All life is Yoga" (The Synthesis of Yoga). To perceive the concurrent Evolution as aim, as action, and also as agency itself requires a deep immersion in the ideas popularised by The Mother & Sri Aurobindo. "Himself the play, Himself the player, Himself the playground," says Sri Aurobindo, famously, in The Life Divine.
Theoretically such notions are current since ages, but to live it and perceive it on a continuous basis is the whole essence as The Mother & Sri Aurobindo emphasise. This project, no doubt, is hazardous as the dualities that form the staple of our life turn complementary to each other often causing moral dilemma or volitional perplexity. But Sri Aurobindo remains firm on the Vedic unitary principle.
"The crude conception of sin as a result of natural wickedness found no place in the thought of these deep thinkers and subtle psychologists. What they perceived, was a great insistent force of Ignorance; either a non-perception of right and truth in the mind or a non-seizing of it in the will, or an inability of the life instincts and desires to follow after it, or the sheer inefficiency of the physical being to rise to the greatness of the divine law." (The Secret of the Veda)
Thus, when we debate over Telangana or the Kishtwar riot, the easy and the lazy habit of laying the blame at the door the other becomes shaky. Although, to see the warring instincts as parts of the same harmonising principle sounds a warning bell concerning our sanity. A "practical" friend on Twitter recently summararily rejected my suggestion that the Castes System can be eradicated through education and change of notion. Nearer home, our own Sri Aurobindo Ashram in Puducherry is besieged at present by a deep schism and unity has eluded for years.
Science and philosophy help us immensely in understanding the world but this conscious process of evolution through our active collaboration is the most redeeming contribution of The Mother & Sri Aurobindo. Heraclitus and Hegel, Wittgenstein and Wilber, all stand corrected by this interpenetrating boisterousness of Integral Yoga. Even, how the wild and intransigent flights of Ignorance is tamed through democratic negotiations and reasoned discourse is itself a pointer to the overriding power of Harmony over discord.
The words of The Mother & Sri Aurobindo have great power and performative potential. Just read about the difficult endeavour of a handful of scholars to smuggle Satprem's The Adventure of Consciouness and allied literature into the erstwhile USSR. In India, however, political resistance is too much and the level of intellectuality is not up to the mark. Let's hope that the Social Media makes some headway where MSM has failed so markedly.
