Ilion along the Bay of Bengal

Sri Aurobindo builds, but also breaks; synthesizes, but also demolishes. His painstaking attempt in metaphysical system-building and writing elaborate commentaries on ancient philosophical texts is incomparable but he also has a lurking mistrust for pure knowledge and has turned the whole corpus of prevailing motivational theories upside down. By affirming “Nothing can be taught” he throws a bombshell at the normal notions of human cognition and stretches subjectivity to unimagined heights and depths. Man’s proclivity for empiricism sustained a permanent injury when Sri Aurobindo lobbed his “Logic of the Infinite” by exempting all supra-physical phenomena from submitting to scrutiny by the senses. Philosophy will always be indebted to him for the methodological breakthroughs that he has fruitfully introduced so authoritatively.

One must strut through the alien terrain of his Ilion where he recreates Homer to get a feel of what he characterizes as “Knowledge by identity.” The “Ladder of consciousness” in Savitri, similarly, imparts such an intimate sense of reality that one shudders to call them fictional. The very combination of a poet and a philosopher in him is indeed a rare occurrence. But what takes the cake is his enviable third quality of being an astute critic. [TNM55]

Future Savitri

[Considering all these factors I will go for the 1951-version which has the finality of revisions by the author himself. - RYD]

Personally, RYD is entitled to his own choice and opinion (like, everyone has his version of JLB), but the question is what will be his verdict as the Chairman of a Committee (like, the Standing Committee) on Savitri. He has to take into consideration the views of various quarters (including even the adversaries) and give audience to the most reticent. Drawing out the feelings of the unwilling, the unassuming, and the withdrawn will be an equally challenging task. We must move, as it were, the heaven and the earth, for we are dealing with Savitri, the Savitri for the future - for the following aeons - and any chink left at this juncture can prove too costly.

FIRST edition is the easiest option, but the complications don't vanish, nor are they all irrelevant. Further, none can rob the validity of SABCL edition on account of The Mother's presence. The CWSA edition, similarly, has its own authenticity and admirers. Fortunately for us, all these are products of a pre-cyber era, and this very fact offers us a wealth of opportunity.

Open or not, a site must have all resources relating to Savitri, and let people study and be aware of the complexities involved. A fresh edition will arise from this collective effort, and there is nothing to hurry or worry. This proposal is sure to infuriate those hardliners further who are sentimental about Savitri as mantra. But the CWSA edition, for all practical purposes, is the point of departure as of now and to stick to this much of common sense can save us from much rancour and recrimination. [TNM55]

Savitri vs. Savitri

[Like some other recent accounts concerned primarily with western locations, this reversion approaches modernism as an open-ended, still continuing global process rather than as a circumscribed aesthetic superseded by postmodernism.
The space-clearing gestures developed in recent modernist studies offer an enabling theoretical and interpretive context for my discussion of Mohan Rakesh (1925–1972), the iconic post-independence playwright in India's majority language, Hindi, and one of India's leading twentieth century authors, across the spectrum of genres and languages. As a member of the first generation of Indian-language writers whose careers unfolded after political independence in 1947, Rakesh exemplifies many of the larger literary, political, and cultural relations (and ruptures) that are seminal to any discussion of Indian modernism—those between colonial and postcolonial modernities, indigenous traditions and western influences, Indian languages and English, bourgeois-romantic nationalism and ironic individualism, Left ideology and a skeptical humanism, nationalism and cosmopolitanism, center and periphery, village and city. His conscious and unconscious self-fashioning as a postcolonial modernist appears in the wide range of literary and "personal" genres he practiced, including short stories, novels, plays, essays, interviews, conversations, reviews, diaries, and letters. In the specific case of drama, Rakesh's three full-length plays show a radical sensibility working through the matter of the remote historical past as well as the immediate present. Ashadh ka ek din (A Day in Early Autumn, 1958), and Lahron ke rajhans (The Royal Swans on the Waves, 1963) place their historical protagonists—the canonical fifth century Sanskrit poet Kalidasa and the Buddha's stepbrother Nand, respectively—in largely invented actions that underscore the intensely human drama of separation and loss elided in the metanarratives of history. The third play, Adhe adhure (The Unfinished, 1969) returns to the postcolonial urban present to portray the collapse of a middle-class family unable to cope with its declining material circumstances and fractured relationships.

Savitri’s engagement with the other in Adhe adhure resonating the seven facets of syadvad or the seven blind men apprehending an elephant is in stark contrast to Sri Aurobindo's Savitri proclaiming "Once my heart chose and chooses not again." [TNM]
