Nation under attack from Marxist anarchists and Hindu Rashtra proponents

Sraddha "a Quarterly devoted to an exposition of the teachings of The Mother and Sri Aurobindo" edited by Arup Basu and published by Sri Aurobindo Centre for Research in Social Sciences (Sri Aurobindo Bhavan, 8, Shakespeare Sarani, Kolkata - 700071) continues to be a quality offering in its seventh year. It can be read at:
http://motherandsriaurobindo.in/#_StaticContent/SriAurobindoAshram/-09 E-Library/-05 Magazines

The JNU episode has shown how ideology can mould minds. It also underlines the fact how we, the followers of The Mother & Sri Aurobindo, have failed miserably to carry their philosophy to the students. Most Universities harbour divrse streams of political opinion but Sri Aurobindo is nowhere to be found. Silence and Meditation are surely admirable Yogic attributes but when the nation is under attack, both from Marxist anarchists and Hindu Rashtra proponents, then a great responsibility devolves upon us.

From whatever little appears on the Web, it's clear that there is no unanimity among the Devotees. Open discussion and debate on matters of socio-political importance are therefore necessary for removing doubts and confusion. Adequate intellectual development is also essential for withstanding the temptation of uncritically supporting the ruling party. Seeing through fallacies in conflicting arguments and detecting methodological errors are crucial for right understanding of issues. Besides, thorough reading of a set of certain writings need to be taken up as a syllabus. A minimum of organised effort can go a long way in pushing this long term goal. [TNM55]

Evolution and Advani

@SavitriEraParty: Sri Aurobindo's vision of the future rolled out in 1914 through a monthly magazine named Arya. Young Indians must wake to his exhortations.
@SavitriEraParty: Sri Aurobindo was prescient enough to formulate an alternative version of Indianhood than what is offered by the Congress, RSS, or the Left.
@SavitriEraParty: BJP, like BSP, is a victim of an imaginary certainty of mustering a majority constituency. BJP is cocksure on theory while #AAP of practice.
@SavitriEraParty: Like Andhra Pradesh, BJP is finding it hard to keep its three factions together owing to overdose of presumed patriotism and righteousness.
@SavitriEraParty: R, A, M represent the present three factions of the BJP. While R is the Tamasic and M, the Rajasic, A constitutes the Sattwic propensities.
@SavitriEraParty: @gopimaliwal Please look at the future in configuring the evolutionary role of Advani instead of relying too much on examples from history.
@SavitriEraParty: @gopimaliwal But you seem to be totally clueless as to the source of the darkness and Advani has better intuition to sense it & act & lead.
@SavitriEraParty: @gopimaliwal Difficult to hazard a guess as to the possible trajectory of the Zeitgeist but Advani definitely has a prominent role in future.
@SavitriEraParty: No doubt Advani heads a faction today but it's the evolutionary wing in the BJP ready to learn & change unlike RSS hardcore or the matadors.
@SavitriEraParty: The most pragmatic and realist truth is that Advani is BJP since he created it and so to expect that he gets out of it is downright foolish.
@SavitriEraParty: Not Savarkar or Golwalkar, it's Advani who like Lenin brought the Hindutva to life and limelight. He must be given opportunity to mend it.

Scripting fruition of the Postscript

At about the same time when the Constituent Assembly was busy giving a final shape to the Constitution of India in 1949 in Delhi, Sri Aurobindo applied himself to writing in Puducherry - barely a year before his passing away - an elaborate justification for establishment of World Union, his Third Dream. Admittedly, one of his last and most profound pronouncements on a patently political topic, A Postscript Chapter constitutes a vision and a prophecy in international relations that might seem too remote at the moment but the logic of which is assuming an ever increasing certitude day by day. The question now is whether some ground level machinery for facilitating the fruition of such a grand idea is in operation at present. [TNM55]

The Mother served an ultimatum on the West on March 6, 1914

When The Mother boarded Kaga Maru on March 6, 1914 in order to meet a bearded recluse in Puducherry, she served an ultimatum on the West. A private voyage; but verily a gigantic leap for the mankind. From then on, the course of history can, as well, be said to be a series of disjointed-seeming footnotes to her agenda. Sri Aurobindo occupies the Centre of Gravity of the whole humanity now. Neither politics nor economics, neither philosophy nor literature can move any further by ignoring him. What The Mother dreamt of a century back is taking shape in a way that is largely unseen. The palette of human thought and action is being remoulded and reconfigured continually for the new creation to coagulate. “If this is she of whom the world has heard, Wonder no more at any happy change.” Pranams at her lotus feet. Spinning mythology

Ashis Nandy had mauled the memory of Sri Aurobindo like a bull in a china shop which Savita Singh has now ably countered by juxtaposing the hermeneutical reading of J.L. Mehta. Parsa Venkateshwar Rao Jr  characterizes Savarkar a morally guilty man, third rate thinker, but he is misrepresented argues Uday Mahurkar. We must differ with Gandhi, asserts Parsa Venkateshwar Rao Jr but visiting Rajghat on January 30, 2013 tells a different tale. [TNM55]

Integral Yoga is no uniform potion

When it comes to The Mother & Sri Aurobindo and Integral Yoga, one feels like Condoleezza Rice remarking “The fact of the matter is I've been black all my life. Nobody needs to tell me how to be black.[125]” Like Socrates’ "examined life,” The Mother’s stress on avoiding the misery of an “aimless life” is perhaps the most basic rule for an aspirant. For a major stretch in life, however, many mistake earning livelihood for the aim although the profession provides the opportunity for flowering of talent, nurturing creativity, and moulding of subjectivity. The resultant individuality, identity, and social mobility, however, do exert a mesmerizing effect whereby the chance of coming face to face with choosing an aim or confronting one’s own real self head on is always deferred. Drawing satisfaction from some substitute as compensation is, of course, forced by subsistence compulsions.

Traditional canons of conduct conveniently contain predominantly direct correspondence between ethical life and action and liberation. But non-linear Integral Yoga Ontology and its spiral evolution paradigm is more prone to post-modernist rapprochement with tentativeness, contingency, and uncertainty of interpretation. This is no logic to condone misconduct (for, the elephant is Brahman and so is the mahut) but the paramountcy of context is never emphasized more elsewhere. The tenet, All life is Yoga, therefore, assumes unprecedented significance against this backdrop. Like the Shatadala or a Sahasra-bahu (called Saas-bahu erroneously in colloquial fashion) temple, the interdependence, interconnection, and economy within a collectivity is thrown into sharp relief. Integral Yoga, thus, is no uniform potion; but rather an arena for experimenting with life along the known tracks and with notions yet unpracticed. [TNM55]

Defending Sri

[Millenarian Elements in the Hindu Religious Traditions Hugh B. Urban The Oxford Handbook of Millennialism In the course of suppressive colonial rule, militant nationalism emerged in messianic attire. Spiritual nationalist Sri Aurobindo described it as a religion directly presented by God. The new age came up with lifestyle gurus such as Osho Rajneesh, who asserted a symbolic end of time by surrendering typical lifestyle practices. The Oxford Handbook of Millennialism - Page 375 - Google Books Result - Catherine Wessinger - 2011 - Although Aurobindo Ghose is today best known as a spiritual teacher and philosopher, he was also, in his youth, one of the primary leaders of the revolutionary ...]

Sri Aurobindo’s name underwent many metamorphoses during his lifetime. From stark anonymity to a slew of pseudonyms and acronyms, his experimentation ended with his signing as Sri Aurobindo sans any surname or caste identity. His works, understandably, have been published under that name and, ordinarily, he is referred to as so. But there are certain types of people who are intolerant of his adding Sri to his name and are always eager to geld it. The Sri to them is a canopy of fundamentalism that smacks of unjustified superiority, thus threatening secular sensibilities.

The fact is that no one can help in this matter as Sri Aurobindo is no more and can’t be questioned as to why he wanted to retain his name this way. So, the minimum one can do is not to distort his name by eclipsing Sri. In book indexes too he should appear under the alphabet S and not A or G as Sri is not an honorific here but an integral part of his name. Sri Aurobindo is yet to receive the prestige he deserves as a poet and a thinker and hence the need to resist the snatching away of his Sri. [TNM55]

Sri Aurobindo refutes Nietzsche

[Nietzsche, Descartes, Lacan and the Death of God Posted by larvalsubjects 11 Comments May 21, 2006
What strikes me as crucial in this passage is Nietzsche’s remark that we have wiped away the horizon, that we now move without direction, that we are suspended in an infinite void and cold, empty space. The death of God therefore seems to signify a world that has lost its coordinates (what else is a horizon if not a way of co-ordinating our movement?) and where the ground has disappeared beneath us. I take it that the term “God” is a generic term for any sort of transcendental term that would fix meaning and identity. It would be a mistake to assume that “God” simply refers to the God of organized religion. Rather God is a generic term referring to anything on the order of a form, essence, transcendence, identity, substance, permanence, ideal, wholeness, totality and so on.]

[April 9, 2007 at 7:46 am Coming across in a hymn of Martin Luther what Hegel described as the cruel words, the harsh utterance, namely, God is dead, the latter was perhaps the first great philosopher to develop the theme of God’s death according to whom, to one form of experience God is dead. Commenting on Kant’s first Critique, Heinrich Heine spoke of a dying God. Heine influenced Nietzsche. Since Heine and Nietzsche the phrase Death of God became popular. (K. Satchidananda Murty, The Realm of Between, IIAS, 1973)]

[The Human Aspiration « Sri Aurobindo Studies 30 Aug 2009 – Sri Aurobindo, The Life Divine
The earliest formula of Wisdom promises to be its last,—God, Light, Freedom, Immortality. These persistent ideals of the race are at once the contradiction of its normal experience and the affirmation of higher and deeper experiences which are abnormal to humanity and only to be attained, in their organised entirety, by a revolutionary individual effort or an evolutionary general progression… The greater the apparent disorder…, the stronger is the spur…]

The firmness with which Sri Aurobindo refutes Nietzsche’s playful affirmation is a milestone in the history of human thought. For long, philosophy has been hostage to a science fiction style of writing or abstract painting. Happily, fatigue has set in and that epoch is fast coming to a close. Further, defending Marx, which was considered pivotal to theory, is no longer that sacrosanct. These are welcome developments but without Sri Aurobindo a satisfying ontological framework is difficult to put together. [TNM55]

Sri Aurobindo builds, but also breaks; synthesizes, but also demolishes. His painstaking attempt in metaphysical system-building and writing elaborate commentaries on ancient philosophical texts is incomparable but he also has a lurking mistrust for pure knowledge and has turned the whole corpus of prevailing motivational theories upside down. By affirming “Nothing can be taught” he throws a bombshell at the normal notions of human cognition and stretches subjectivity to unimagined heights and depths. Man’s proclivity for empiricism sustained a permanent injury when Sri Aurobindo lobbed his “Logic of the Infinite” by exempting all supra-physical phenomena from submitting to scrutiny by the senses. Philosophy will always be indebted to him for the methodological breakthroughs that he has fruitfully introduced so authoritatively.

One must strut through the alien terrain of his Ilion where he recreates Homer to get a feel of what he characterizes as “Knowledge by identity.” The “Ladder of consciousness” in Savitri, similarly, imparts such an intimate sense of reality that one shudders to call them fictional. The very combination of a poet and a philosopher in him is indeed a rare occurrence. But what takes the cake is his enviable third quality of being an astute critic. [TNM55]

All life is Yoga is for all

In chapter seven of Heraclitus, Sri Aurobindo writes on the role of philosophy. He praises critical reason for helping to arrive at the truth but calls a halt to it at that point. Thereafter, the dynamics of living the truth should be the guiding force and not philosophy.

The same can be said about the Yoga techniques too. They may help to a point but later prove to be a barrier. So, the formula - All life is Yoga - offered by Sri Aurobindo assumes significance. Not only it takes into account individual difference and destiny but also contains allowances as regards evolutionary possibilities. Unhinged from past formulations and dogma, it also ensures universality as well as integrality.

With such theoretical astuteness, one would imagine a course of spiritual practice that is smooth sailing and assured. But the truth is that for want of any standardization it escapes evaluation and emulation. This, however, must not be looked upon as a drawback but appreciated for its huge advantage. The open ended nature of human aspiration and imagination running in consonance with the Divine perfection is surely an empowering phenomenon.

Apart from the cultural prejudices and geographical bottlenecks, a major factor that restricts this knowledge system from reaching a wide spectrum of world population is the Ashram-centric approach. Monopoly over production of books is erroneously construed as the existence of some sort of supervisory authority or a rating system for granting hierarchy slots. The idea of being forced into membership of an alien community, too, is instantly repulsive for most. [TNM55]
