Renewed resolve to take the Five Dreams Manifesto forward

Prapatti left in 1989 and Babaji Maharaj in 1998. Centres and educational institutions dedicated to The Mother & Sri Aurobindo have multiplied in Odisha since then. Round the year celebrations take place and a galaxy of writers and speakers tour all over the State. Although, more than a million people are directly involved, not much online presence is noticed. Nor, engaging with current affairs or socio-political issues. There is need for coming out of routine, mechanicity, and complacence. Infusing dynamism is the need of the hour.

Establishing institutions for propagating some ideal seems logical but the institution imprisoning and dwarfing the ideal is also a reality. Not only that, such an institution fighting not to allow the ideal to grow organically and protecting its own hegemony is not unusual. Centralisation, bureaucratisation, and sycophancy are at the root of Odisha not being able to lead the country despite having maximum resources. Thousands of students come out of our schools every year but not even a ripple is heard from them as citizens. No one affirms in public that he has been influenced by The Mother & Sri Aurobindo.

In view of University controversies and Religious mega-events, it's essential that the followers of The Mother & Sri Aurobindo make their presence felt. Misleading ideologies are having a hey day because the vision of Sri Aurobindo is still unknown and under-appreciated. There should be renewed resolve to take the Five Dreams Manifesto forward to every nook and corner of the country. And, in this task, the people of Odisha can be pioneers in the world; a historic opportunity indeed. [TNM55]

Satprem, Mangesh V. Nadkarni, and Georges van Vrekhem

One of the vital contributions of The Mother is that she didn't allow any other stream of tradition or teaching to be associated with Sri Aurobindo and took all care to keep it separate. Thus, with the publication of ARYA in 1914, a new era can be said to have dawned for the mankind. This period of production of a wide body of literature can be considered coming to an end with the demise of Satprem and Mangesh V. Nadkarni in 2007 and Georges van Vrekhem in 2012. Now, the challenge is how to preserve the uniqueness of this teaching and communicate its distinctiveness.

In this context, it's important to remember how Rod Hemsell demolished Ken Wilber's misinterpretation of Sri Aurobindo in January, 2002 and the series of essays M. Alan Kazlev wrote subsequently. As regards Peter Heehs, barring that single page involving biographical matters, he can't be accused of distorting the teaching or philosophy. Rather, his 2006 Hyderabad speech on Hinduism has proved to be a big hurdle for supporters of Hindutva who are trying hard to appropriate Sri Aurobindo.

A very common feature with Sri Aurobindo is that his name is always mentioned along with three or four other luminaries. This is the most misleading aspect about him since he himself has written his disagreements with his famous contemporaries and other revered authorities. So, instead of treating Sri Aurobindo as part of some Perennial philosophy, his own innovations and synthesis need to be presented with precision. Otherwise, one indulges in avoidable disstortion. JNU and Pollock episodes have raised enough dust

Congress and the Left, despite having all resources, couldn't stop RSS. Sri Aurobindo's ideology will do that magic. http://savitriera.blogspot.in/2016/03/hindu-rashtra-is-affront-to.html …
The liberal intellectual milieu that I have lived in during the last sixty years must continue. Sri Aurobindo adds the Evolutionary angle.
Sri Aurobindo makes use of any number of icons, myths, & legends in his works but that doesn't mean he buttresses their veracity or validity.
Mythology & Rituals inherited by the parents shouldn't be imposed upon their offsprings in the guise of some glorious tradition and culture.
Science, and not Mythology, should preoccupy young minds. Parents have the responsibility to provide such an environment and due protection.
Mythology and misleading historical narratives serve identity politics well. Safeguarding individual freedom and autonomy is each one's duty.
The Integral spirit of "ARYA" edited by Sri Aurobindo 100 years back should inspire the young Indians and not narrow politicking and hatred.
JNU and Pollock episodes have raised enough dust to attract international attention on matters having farreaching intellectual implications.
Marxist viewpoint is insufficient to address the issues & only Sri Aurobindo possesses right theoretical formulation for logical conclusion.
When Sri Aurobindo was writing for ARYA magazine 100 years back, he conducted an intense examination of possibilities apropos human future.
Sri Aurobindo could clearly see that the Nation idea is slowly moving towards larger prospects and World Union is the next Evolutionary step.
Whether to judge Sri Aurobindo by what Subhas Bose said about him or judge Subhas by what Sri Aurobindo thought of him indicates one's level
How Sri Aurobindo characterised Hitler is one of his signal contributions. With that as fulcrum other events and people can be evaluated.
Hindutva enthusiasts have no freedom to judge things independently and hence their intelligent seeming pronouncements are mere parroting.
Social issues are avoided by Hindutva fans who are wary of open discourse and individual freedom. Young Indians must escape their contagion.
Power politics has its own dynamics and media subserve to manipulate discourse. Knowledge unveiled by Sri Aurobindo needs to be safeguarded.
Not only Mythology, the overly rationalistic and positivist approach of Science is also questioned by Sri Aurobindo. They are eye openers.
Many people flaunt their wide reading and intelligence but have no idea how given a chance Sri Aurobindo could have moulded their worldview.
@SanyalIndranil I can understand that certain facts of history are cruel and injure feeling but that can't rob my right to judge or tweet.
@SanyalIndranil Each person has a monopoly over her or his opinion. So how s/he views or portrays Sri Aurobindo can't be dictated by others.

Hindu Rashtra is an affront to the Constitution of India

The Constitution of India was crafted by weaving the best of human values and it will take a long time for people to be able to accept it fully.
All shades of Sedition are perfectly fine as long their basic pledge towards Democracy and winning majority through elections remain intact.
Feb 28 No aspect of our Constitution should be considered an inalienable holy cow except Democracy, the will of the people, as guiding principle.
Be it Pollock or patriotism, Hindutva votaries forget to look at things from different angles. Perspective and nuance are in short supply!

Lambasting some persons has hardly any value. Disabusing them of the ideology they are following is the real challenge and it needs sagacity
So, RSS project of creating an alternative to Kejriwal has been accomplished. Easy to handle JNU than the Guerrilla tactics of Muffler-man!
Muslim votes are the reason why political parties hate RSS. Savitri Era Party, on the contrary, opposes RSS on the ground of Hindu interest.
Hindu rituals take away the right to approach God directly by hiring a priest as intermediary while Yoga empowers to take own responsibility
Education stokes intellectual hunger, curiosity, and discernment for quality. But, why Hindu scholars are so lukewarm towards Sri Aurobindo?
Educated Indians who confidently assert adhering to Dharma and Hindu tenets are doing a disservice to own selves by ignoring Sri Aurobindo.
"Integrative Evolutionism of Sri Aurobindo" an outstanding chapter in C.M. Brown's Hindu Perspectives on Evolution: Darwin, Dharma, & Design.
One advantage of flowing with Sri Aurobindo is that one is saved from the agony of negotiating tortuous arguments over "Whether God exists?"
Another fact Sri Aurobindo drills into our heads is that our surface personality is only the tip of an "iceberg" which one needs to explore.
The third important lesson Sri Aurobindo imparts is that Yoga is meant for self-perfection and must be taken up earnestly from an early age.
@madhukishwar RSS is anti-intellectual, agreed. But why enlightened supporters invest their energy in a no-vision party is really a riddle.
RSS avoids stirring the hornet's nest; never attempted any library or publishing project as it will open Pandora's box of Mythological texts.

The new age that is coming upon us

Despite what Sri Aurobindo tells about the intricacies of yoga and allied esoteric matters, the academic tone of his justifications for writing is very interesting as can be seen from his following comments on the ARYA.
  • "We have been obliged in our first year for reasons we shall indicate in the preface to our August number1 to devote the Review almost entirely to high philosophy and severe and difficult thinking."
  • "Its object is to feel out for the thought of the future, to help in shaping its foundations and to link it to the best and most vital thought of the past."
  • "Our idea was the thinking out of a synthetic philosophy which might be a contribution to the thought of the new age that is coming upon us. We start from the idea that humanity is moving to a great change of its life which will even lead to a new life of the race,—in all countries where men think, there is now in various forms that idea and that hope,—and our aim has been to search for the spiritual, religious and other truth which can enlighten and guide the race in this movement and endeavour."
The present intellectual scene in India is no different and a ruthless approach towards all domains of knowledge is necessary. Let young people decide what they want to study without interference from elders. Let the Universities provide a plethora of short-duration options to choose from so that students experiment with different subjects. Language teaching should be dropped by the educational institutions and left to the voluntary sector. [TNM55]

Nation under attack from Marxist anarchists and Hindu Rashtra proponents

Sraddha "a Quarterly devoted to an exposition of the teachings of The Mother and Sri Aurobindo" edited by Arup Basu and published by Sri Aurobindo Centre for Research in Social Sciences (Sri Aurobindo Bhavan, 8, Shakespeare Sarani, Kolkata - 700071) continues to be a quality offering in its seventh year. It can be read at:
http://motherandsriaurobindo.in/#_StaticContent/SriAurobindoAshram/-09 E-Library/-05 Magazines

The JNU episode has shown how ideology can mould minds. It also underlines the fact how we, the followers of The Mother & Sri Aurobindo, have failed miserably to carry their philosophy to the students. Most Universities harbour divrse streams of political opinion but Sri Aurobindo is nowhere to be found. Silence and Meditation are surely admirable Yogic attributes but when the nation is under attack, both from Marxist anarchists and Hindu Rashtra proponents, then a great responsibility devolves upon us.

From whatever little appears on the Web, it's clear that there is no unanimity among the Devotees. Open discussion and debate on matters of socio-political importance are therefore necessary for removing doubts and confusion. Adequate intellectual development is also essential for withstanding the temptation of uncritically supporting the ruling party. Seeing through fallacies in conflicting arguments and detecting methodological errors are crucial for right understanding of issues. Besides, thorough reading of a set of certain writings need to be taken up as a syllabus. A minimum of organised effort can go a long way in pushing this long term goal. [TNM55]

Avoiding literalism and embracing universalism

An ordinary citizen is too puny and inchoate an entity before the geographical spread and cultural diversity of a nation like India. Even top politicians holding Constitutional offices look so small and inadequate when it comes to being seen as awake to rival views. In this context, the evening TV fights have come to occupy an entertaining mode of dwelling in the national consciousness which appear higher than Bollywood, Cricket, or K-Serials level.

Although, the books by The Mother & Sri Aurobindo seem intellectually intimidating, what they actually say has a very simple and intimate air about it. Scholarship around Sri Aurobindo, invariably, tries to tackle the genealogical aspects of his thought, thus adding avoidable fat. Besides, what is generally fleshed out is elaborate details of his complex psychological framework. All these, obviously, rob the pleasure of understanding and roaming in the enchanting vistas of their thought.

One of the most reassuring aspects of The Mother & Sri Aurobindo is that they understand, threadbare, the deficiencies and delinquencies of human nature and yet expect that any positive change is to come through playing out of its preponderances. Aware of the finitude and inadequacies of emotions, they, nevertheless, hope that they will rise through attempts at sublimation and transform themselves. Thus, the Evolutionary perspective is foregrounded in which Emergence or Grace forms a crucial element.

The debate on Nationalism is gaining momentum and a lot of Sri Aurobindo will be quoted and chewed. But, to squeeze out of him a constricted version of it would amount to a great injustice to the liberal and catholic spirit of his overall philosophy. So, avoiding literalism and embracing universalism can be considered as the secret. [TNM55]
