"When I wrote the first book, I thought that it would appeal to a very small section of Catholics who for some reason had a similar interest in Jews and Judaism. And I was very surprised it became somewhat of a best-seller and hit such a responsive chord among a wide range of Catholics. One reason for it I think is that Judaism and the Catholic faith are not two different faith systems. They are exactly the same religion, separated in time by the fact of the coming of the Messiah. And therefore, looking at the relationship between the two resonates very deeply and richly, and makes somehow more concrete and more compelling for Catholic readers their own Catholic faith."
I think there is another dimension too. I think that we are living in the times that St. Paul alluded to in the Letter of the Romans when the number of the Gentiles is close to complete, when the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled, the veil will be lifted from the eyes of the Jews and there will be a wave of Jewish entry into the Church, and that will be the final completion of the Church to precede the Second Coming.
I think because that supernaturally it is that time, on some level therefore God is inspiring this interest.

The Arya ceased publication in 1921 and The standard Bearer in 1924. Some of Sri Aurobindo's writings were also published in outside periodicals like Modern Review (Calcutta), Calcutta Review, The Vedic Magazine (Lahore), Shama's (Madras), Suprabhat (Bengali), and Bharati (Bengali). Other journals like Hindustan Review, Prabuddha Bharata, Vedanta Kesari, The Scholar, Aryan Path, New Review, etc. carried various essays and articles by the disciples till Sri Aurobindo Mandir Annual (1942), and The Advent (1944) were launched.

The Mother's talk, "Woman and the War" was published in the Fujoshimbun newspaper in Japan on July 7, 1916. [TNM]

C for Confusion!

[However, as much as I want to cheer on Hitchens (I agree with a lot of his points against mythic religions, and I love his sick humor), his position is too much firmly planted on a rational level of either-or: either you believe in God or you don't. There's no room for "*as if* God is real" which some people believe so (including myself).
For example, I don't believe in a mythic God. For me, I equate the concept of God with Spirit, One Taste, The Divine, Brahman, Tao, Buddha-nature, the Kosmos. But there are times when I choose to address God *as if* He/She/It is a sentient Being so I can project my thoughts and intentions and access a deeper sense of reality more easily. This helps me get my bearing psychologically and spiritually. I think a lot of people do it the same way as I do. There are others who do it differently, e.g. I imagine that advance meditators and contemplatives in other wisdom traditions have access to a more stable level of consciousness where they can dissolve themselves into One Taste at will. To each his own, based on their level of consciousness, I guess. I've always told people that I'm not a Buddhist. But it's no secret that I have a great deal of affinity with Buddhism. Then why haven't I converted to Buddhism or even claimed to be a Buddhist? To which my answer is: I don't have to, do I?
To me, I can appreciate and learn from Buddhism without committing to its dogmatic forms. Buddhism is the most scientific of all religions that I've encountered, but it is not immune to dogmatism. All religions have their dogmas. Dogma has its place and purpose as we develop our understanding of the nature of reality. But personally, I think I'm done with it. It was already a challenge for me to crawl out of the dogmatism of my Catholic upbringing so why trade one dogmatism for another? Another thing is that, calling myself a Buddhist is essentially limiting my identity. I'd rather have an "open source" philosophy than to commit to a single religion.
By default, I'm still Catholic, at least on paper. Tough luck, I know. But if I dig deep enough and use a more sophisticated interpretation, Catholicism (and Christianity in general) has a lot of things in common with Buddhism when it comes to their Cosmogonies.
"While Buddhism is deemed nontheistic, the Vedas are regarded as polytheistic, and the Bible is monotheistic, we have seen that the cosmogonies of Vajrayana Buddhism, Vedanta, and Neoplatonic Christianity have so much in common that they could almost be regarded as varying interpretations of a single theory. Moreover, the commonality does not end there, for in the Near East, the writings of Plotinus (205-270) also influenced Islamic and Jewish theories of creation. This apparent unity could be attributed to mere coincidence, or to the historical propagation of a single, speculative, metaphysical theory throughout south Asia and the Near East. For example, the Upanishads may well have influenced the writings of early Mahayana thinkers in India, and they could also have made their way to the Near East, where they might have inspired the writings of Plotinus. On the other hand, Plotinus declared that his theories were based on his own experiential insights, and similar claims have been made by many Buddhist and Vedantin contemplatives. There is a maxim that says, "chase many rabbits, catch none." I believe that too. So if I have to pick one religion and stick with its practices, it would probably be Buddhism. Vajrayana Buddhism to be exact. But I still don't feel like it. Thanks Ned for expressing the obvious, which as you have observed in a number of online forums, people are reluctant to accept. Alan and you, of course, invariably insist on the experience aspect of the Integral Yoga and that is certainly the most important facet; but a general appreciation in respect of The Mother and Sri Aurobindo is sorely missing, and that is not going to improve as long as we the followers remain ambivalent.
You must, further, have realized that the opposition to The Mother and Sri Aurobindo arises out of a concerted resistance that has neither any intellectual rigour nor democratic ethos. So, it is only apparent that we too face them with comparable means. I am happy to spot you after a long silence as The Mother has endowed you with the power of eloquence. A manifesto for the 21st century has been left behind by Dr. Mangesh V. Nadkarni

Headless chickens are on a beheading mission. Although, political power is basically handling the economy, the route to gaining that power is by manipulating people's emotion through hard-hitting criticism and campaigning. Savitri Erans have nothing to do with porridge religions dishing out irrational mythologies. Those who feel bound by old compulsions should disclose their intentions instead of hiding behind hidden agenda.

Political opinions, likewise, tend to be different among the Savitri Erans which is natural. But the differences can be narrowed down on the basis of a common minimum programme. Such a manifesto has been left behind by Dr. Mangesh V. Nadkarni that was published in The Indian Express on Thursday, March 21, 2002 (Sri Aurobindo’s Opposition: Why the Indian establishment resisted him) laying down the clear agenda for the 21st century.

We call upon all the Savitri Erans spread over the whole planet to rise in unison to the call by Dr. Nadkarni and act resolutely so as to shatter Sri Aurobindo’s Opposition. Joining of hands, and not dissipation, is the need of the hour. We must be all ears to Dr. M.V. Nadkarni.

Savitri Era mythology

The Mother and Sri Aurobindo have liberated us from the numerous gods and goddesses and there is no need for us to search for ancient epics and mythologies. They are the sole gods now but interestingly, a new mythology emerges from their work during the last two centuries. Momentous events, dramatic as well as traumatic, have taken place between 1872 and 1973, and countless persons are connected to these, whether directly or indirectly. To string them together is an enormous task, but Savitri Erans will do it as a labour of love. [TNM]

A religion, similarly, takes care not to pitch for a particular political ideology so that it is able to attract as many people as possible. Steer clear of the muscular cultural nationalism

[The enemy of my enemy is my friend From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. The phrase, The enemy of my enemy is my friend is usually considered a foreign policy doctrine that is commonly used to confront a significant enemy through an intermediary in order to undermine the enemy and in a "cold" manner, as opposed to a "hot", direct confrontation. It's an ancient proverb that means that solely because two parties have a common enemy, they are friends. Often described as an Arab proverb, there is also an identical Chinese proverb[1] and both may be an extension of another Chinese proverb that says, "It is good to strike the serpent's head with your enemy's hand."]
My enemy's enemy is my friend principle leads to Coalition building resulting in a Two-party system. In India , however, dynastic politics based on regional charisma is taking root in many of the states, and hence, the overall picture at the national level remains unclear and chaotic. In this scenario, any talk of seeking votes by addressing the rationality of the electorate turns irrelevant.

Savitri Era Party, therefore, has to proceed very cautiously so that it retains its distinctiveness. Not only would it steer clear of the muscular cultural nationalism flaunted by the Hindutva brigade, but also fight forcefully the soulless secular policies thrust by the Marxists to strangulate the national polity. The Judeo-Vedic heritage of Savitri Era Religion has in its treasure enough ammunition to counter the puerile politics that dominates the contempoary India.

Voyage to Bali

To be woken up before dawn and then made to trudge to the river 2kms away in an winter morning every year, first, to take a dip in the cold water and then sail a well-decorated toy-boat made of plantain tree sheaths, was perhaps the most significant internationalist idea that one lived through like all children in Orissa. The whole crowd of boats was supposed to leave for Bali amidst chanting of “Aa-Ka-Ma-Bhai, Pana-Gua-Thoi."

To visit and move about in Balijatra, the annual fair held in front of the erstwhile Barabati Fort at Cuttack was a persistent yearning, the maritime prowess that the ancestors possessed being a salutary sentiment alongside. The popular Khudurukuni puja with its tear-jerker tale of Ta’poi, held on four consecutive Sundays of the subsequent month, kept the memory of her brothers, who had sailed abroad, always alive. Not to mention, the classic, “Baliraja” by the great novelist, Kanhu Charan Mohanty depicting the exploits of the maritime traders and sea-pirates, an unforgettable thriller.

The six-day Indo-US joint naval exercise along with Australia, Japan and Singapore dubbed Malabar 07, is on in the Bay of Bengal while a protest march by the Left parties is underway in Orissa. “Voyage to Bali” is still a far-off dream bordering on the mythical, but the ideal of human unity is aflame in our hearts and formation of the World Union indeed seems a distinct possibility today. As votaries of plurality (in India, not in China), even a two-party system would be anathema to the Leftists. But when it comes to reforming the electoral system, their contribution is precious little. Ditto for intra-party democracy. Shedding such selective crocodile tears is nothing but utter hypocrisy.
