Aligning human endeavour to the forces of Evolution

Echoing Humans need not apply, Abhijit Bhaduri sees future in relationship workers. An excerpt:

[Problems are getting too complex to be done by one individual. The days of the lone genius working alone in a lab are over. Problems have to be seen through a multidisciplinary lens. No longer can someone from one discipline solve problems all alone... Working in transdisciplinary teams will mean that knowing how to manage people and coordinate with others will be skills that will be valuable in the job market. Routine problems will get solved by algorithms. Human beings who can solve complex problems will be valuable... The future belongs to people who are more emotionally intelligent. This may be the era of the “relationship worker” – someone who can handle complex human relationships.]
Last year I presented a paper captioned Reimagining and Refashioning Integral Management available at: https://t.co/YGoEhdLyp7

An extract:

Everything can be managed: that is perhaps the most ambitious objective of Management and hence the concept of Zero defects, etc. But the Integral approach doesn’t subscribe to such optimism. Sri Aurobindo has outlined three principles of Education, the first of which is ‘nothing can be taught’. In the same vein, it can be asserted that nothing can be managed. However, this is not pessimistic, but rather surrendering or aligning the human endeavour to the forces of Evolution in constructive spirit. [TNM55]

Love affair with Western thought continues

The love affair with Western thought continues. Just read about how Kierkegaard wanted his philosophical writings to be read without being concerned about the author, which means he anticipated Barthes.

A. Aumann (‎2011) observes:

[Berthold portrays Hegel and Kierkegaard as anticipating the concerns of postmodern thinkers from Roland Barthes and Jacques Derrida to Michel Foucault and Jacques Lacan (EA 134).]

Hegel and Kierkegaard concurring on this is further interesting. So, there is no escape from Hegel. The second book co-edited by Rimina on Hegel is in press and Silika's dissertation on OOO is receiving final touches, as I turn 61 today. [TNM55]

Scholarly activity is an important element of Integral Yoga

All life is Yoga may or may not be the reality but all life is reading for followers of The Mother & Sri Aurobindo. Their writings including the commentaries by disciples are essential for proper understanding of various nuances. Besides, reasonable acquaintance with Western philosophy and poetry is also desirable. One may not be interested in all kinds of subjects but limiting Sri Aurobindo within education or Indian culture alone is a defective method. Further, searching quotations for justifying one's own viewpoint or a pet ideology is also a form of misrepresentation. So, in all these aspects, one must exercise utmost caution.

Another common practice is to denounce intellectual culture by admonishing for lack of experience or spiritual contact. They are imposters for whom parroting The Mother & Sri Aurobindo's words is used for terrorising others. If they really possess the yogic power, they should enjoy their bliss instead of wallowing in theoretical controversy. Scholarly activity is an important element of Integral Yoga and those young must not neglect this aspect under any pretext. Social media provides a very convenient platform for trying one's hand in writing and writing demands further reading leading to additional learning.

Uniqueness of the philosophy of The Mother & Sri Aurobindo is well known but its significance is yet to gain desreved recognition and popularity. Adequate number of people are not there who have read their works thoroughly and understand them threadbare. Many from the above category are not conversant with Western philosophy. Many don't have the flair for writing. Still many don't have that activist spirit and prefer the path of silent yoga. All these difficulties lead to their eclipsing from public consciousness and must be reversed. [TNM55]

Indian perspective burnished by Sri Aurobindo's prophecies

Irreducible Mind and its sequel Beyond Physicalism made waves when they were published but I have not read them. So, when known scholars on Sri Aurobindo like Debashish Banerji and Makarand R. Paranjape edit a book on the theme of Posthumanism, it certainly can prove to be a milestone in the history of ideas. Hence, the editors and other contributors need to be congratulated for this.

Ever since McLuhan broke free from the orthodox Marxist line of thinking of his Frankfurt School contemporaries like Benjamin, Horkheimer, and Adorno, the world has not been the same. But unfortunately, the geography of Western commentators has not advanced much since the days of Dante. As a result, the Indian situation has never been subjected to an honest theoretical analysis.

So, against this backdrop, let's hope that Critical Posthumanism would introduce the much needed Indian perspective duly burnished by Sri Aurobindo's prophecies. Further, the modern generation is not comfortable with highfalutin prose or wooly speculations. It demands proof and action. So, whosoever succeeds in providing these basics would be applauded, else will fall by the wayside. [TNM55]

Selfless service scenario that Srinivasan anticipates

M.S. Srinivasan (Editor, Fourth Dimensions, Pondichery) has contributed a paper titled, "Business and Society: A Multidimensional Perspective" to SAMSMRITI – The SAMS Journal (Vol. 10(2), July – December 2016, Bangalore).

Here are a few extracts:

[But to realize fully the moral and spiritual potential of ideals like ethics, social responsibility or sustainability they have to be pursued for their own sake, as a selfless service for the well being and progress of the larger whole of life. But if we pursue these ideals with an eye on some pragmatic gains it not only diminishes their uplifting, evolutionary potential but also restricts their material results.]

[Globalization is making us aware of the unity, interdependence and connectedness of our economic life. But all these unities are the outer manifestation of a deeper and inner unity of the human and terrestrial life at the psychological and spiritual level of our being. Our bodies are part of the universal physical energies of nature. Our individual bodies are linked together with the bodies of all others, human and non-human, material, biological and animal.]

[We also know that whatever we do or give for the well-being and progress of others or the whole ultimately returns to us manifold enriching our own well-being. Similarly all hurt or violence we inflict on others or the larger whole also returns upon us. Ultimately, all the higher and broader ideals emerging in the corporate world like ethics, social and ecological responsibility or globalization, to realize their highest potential have to be based on the perception of this integral unity of all life. All our actions have to be a movement towards a progressive attainment of our inner being and outer life to this inescapable law of unity.]

Elsewhere, he has been writing on allied themes, regularly:

While the "selfless service" scenario that Srinivasan anticipates may seem remote at the moment, we have theoretical justification for it from another wizard of words, Debashish Banerji:

[But one may conceive of an organ of Knowledge in which multiple descriptions of Reality can all be equally true and simultaneous experiences. This is what Sri Aurobindo calls Supermind. (INTEGRAL PSYCHOLOGY – THEORIZING ITS DISCIPLINARY BOUNDARIES: A TALK AT THE CULTURAL INTEGRATION FELLOWSHIP, SAN FRANCISCO, 2008) http://www.sciy.org/?p=1774 in Praxis by debbanerji January 6, 2010]

Thus, we obviate all practical difficulties in the way of achieving a life of harmony upon earth. [TNM55]

Habermas, Taylor, Gregory, and Milbank

Many thinkers and authors don't become much famous during their lifetime but their writings become widely known afterwards. The name of Kierkegaard comes to mind in this context. Some writers give some extra importance to some philosopher or poet of the past resulting in a redrawing of history of ideas. Pfau highlighting Coleridge or Lilla recommending Rousseau fall in this category. Some others like Bellah focus on a certain period of time as crucial which necessitates thinking about the progress of history anew. Thus, it is essential for students to be aware of such lesser known facts.

In India, a narrative is taught in the schools that Mahatma Gandhi brought freedom. This is a clear case of disinformation and no particular remedy has been effected till date. Calling him Mahatma and the Father of the Nation also are contested, justifiably. Similarly, Ambedkar is accorded disproportionate respect by his followers without due academic rigour and comparison. It appears that no political party in India is interested in a sound version of history. Such a cavalier attitude is not good for developing necessary scientific spirit in the country, thus thwarting creativity. But expecting RSS, which is an epitome of rumour and falsehood, to take corrective measures is futile.

Attracting eyeballs and drawing attention space has become pivotal for modern economy and hence peddling lies has gained a new level of respectability. So, there is virtually nothing against which something can be checked for veracity or lack of it. As more and more people readily compromise with values, institutions, too, get corroded. Paid media is a stark reality now and so is the case with Universities and system of awards and honours. Although, this paints a bleak picture of the future of human civilisation, we must put our faith on Evolution which has its own logic and plan. [TNM55]

It seems that the first uses of secularization to refer to such an epochal process date from the 1830s, and that they emerged in a specific context: namely, in debates over the reshaping of Germany’s religious and political order that were taking place in the period of political turbulence (the Vormärz) leading up to the 1848 revolution and National Assembly. It further seems that this new usage took place within the new discourse or discipline of philosophical history that had emerged when Kantian and Hegelian metaphysics were projected onto political, legal, and ecclesiastical historiographies... One might say that since 1848, philosophical histories of secularization as an epochal rationalization of society have hovered at the edges of the university, as we see in the rival accounts of secularization provided by such thinkers as Habermas, Taylor, Brad Gregory, John Milbank, and others.

Bradley, Bataille, and Baudrillard

Just received the soft copy of my article, "Harnessing Western Philosophy for Self-Management" published in SAMSMRITI, The SAMS Journal (Volume 10, Issue 2, July-December, 2016) edited by Dr. K.C. Mishra, Director, Sambhram School of Management, Sambhram Academy of Management Studies, Bangalore. The Editorial introduces it as below:

[“Harnessing Western Philosophy for Self-Management” is something special a piece and Mr. Tusar Nath Mohapatra says people still search meaning of their life even today. He talks of spirituality perceiving the spirit hidden behind the material world and suggests the oriental tradition can give a meaningful solution; it‟s only learning self-management to lead a harmonious and meaningful living.]

An extract from the article:

The lens of Western thought serves as a useful tool to understand the world around us and the mystery of our own existence. By yoking both science and mathematics to its advantage, speculative philosophy has traversed a long path in discovering new ways of looking at our place in the universe as well as the realms we carry within ourselves.

The word "spirituality" is used in a variety of contexts. But its most simple meaning lies in its literal sense, that is perceiving the spirit hidden behind the material world. Since time immemorial, seekers have aspired to break through the barrier between the visible and the invisible and have left behind their experiences for others to work upon, in different cultures and continents. The Oriental tradition, or especially, the ancient Indian wisdom, in this context, can be looked upon as largely revelatory in nature. While the Truth was disclosed at the very dawn of its civilization and various philosophies and systems of practice were formulated to attain the Truth, it has never been easy to bridge the gulf between it and the ordinary human experience.

It is here that the new ways hewed by the Western philosophers comes to one's rescue. Without any pretension of leading one to Self-realization or a Divine-encounter, it takes the rational route and tries to clear the hurdles in seeing aright. Honest in its avowed goal of thinking the unthinkable, it sets out to humanize the transcendental idea and harmonises the austere and otherworldly nature of spiritual pursuits with ordinary human aspirations. [TNM55]

Ramanuja, Dayananda, and Sri Aurobindo

Week-long cultural and entertainment bonanza opened downstairs last evening as part of 18th year Durga Puja celebrations. The hold of religion is so well-oiled that it's difficult to even think of for anyone its negative features that we discuss. Attended the IGNCA seminar on Ramanuja in the morning and the focus was on bhakti and service which lubricate religion. The speakers were emphatic how he secured philosophical validity for bhakti as if philosophy ended there. Silika presented her pre-thesis submission seminar on Object-Oriented Ontology today which is, of course, a matter of joy and pride. Let's hope that this latest stream of philosophy doesn't take the new converts for a ride.

The followers of The Mother & Sri Aurobindo, in this context, are lagging behind considerably. Every organisation is using modern management and communication techniques for involving more and more people but nothing comparable is being attempted by us. Thus, expanding religious modalities should be a priority so that the intellectual content can be fed in small doses in due course.

It is what is illegitimate to assert about her and in her name that concerns us foremost. Yet a corpus of collective experience in an Integral Psychology about what is possible and how, cannot but speak of her and must find the languages to do so. These languages may be impersonal, personal but ahistorical or personal and historical or all of these (as in Sri Aurobindo’s own case, in his varied narrations). But without this attempt, the formulation of an Integral Psychology will remain impractical and incomplete as a core possibility within the (post)-human.

Sri Aurobindo is closer to modernity than Dante

Knowledge accumulation is an ancient enterprise which refuses to cease. But after so much of scientific and philosophical advancement our understanding of the outer Universe as well as inner universe can at best be said to be rudimentary. The contributions of The Mother & Sri Aurobindo are an authentic source but it is difficult to recommend them for assured result. In that sense, they belong to the realm of metaphysical speculation or poetic imagination. That said, it's profitable to turn to their socio-political ideas and literary-cultural output for educational purposes. This has, especially, assumed urgency in view of the Hindutva menace that we discussed in the last post.

Mapping genealogical trajectories in Sri Aurobindo's oeuvre is a herculean task but highly rewarding and fertile field. That itself offers an intellectual journey around the world. Further, one finds him closer to modernity than say, Dante at whose time science was in infancy. Thus, Sri Aurobindo's relevance to current Indian scene is immense. Providing an alternative political ideology is still more potent than the pedagogical dimension. [TNM55]
