The story of Sri Ramakrishna Das who came to be known as Babaji Maharaj is also a curious one. His series of slim books played an important role in fulfilling the aim of Sri Aurobindo Loka Sahitya. Besides, three magazines were instrumental in spreading the message, far and wide: Navajyoti, Navaprakash, and Sri Aurobindo Karmadhara (later, Purnanga Siksha Patra). Weekly Study Circles (Pathachakra) spread to different corners and schools were also established. Students were involved through Camps and Conferences. A lot of hope and enthusiasm had gripped a large section of people.
I joined B.J.B. College, Bhubaneswar in July 1971 and remember to have heard Udar in a Camp at the Patel Hall school, sometime later. Another pioneer, Raghunath Pani was the Headmaster of D.M. School, when I joined Regional College of Education. In July 1972. Panchanan Mohanty too was active under the aegis of New Life Society and Sri Aurobindo Sankruti Sansad. Chittaranjan Das, Monoj Das, Mohapatra Nilamani Sahu, and many other top intellectuals added aura to the movement. This is just a thumbnail sketch from faint memory.
Not much has changed after fifty years. The movement is much more vibrant now but no visible attempt for giving leadership to rest of the country. Language is the main bottleneck and there is no conscious attempt to make others aware in Hindi, Bengali, or English. Not even a handle in Twitter. The reason for this reticence is not known but may be for avoiding controversies.
Annual Conference at Cuttack will be held from April 4 to 7, 2020. Visiting Odisha can open many new dimensions for the Devotees of The Mother & Sri Aurobindo, residing in other States. Besides, it's centrally located and conveniently accessible from all parts of the country. Sri Aurobindo Ashram - Delhi Branch has launched an ambitious Centre in a remote place like Kechla.
Champalal, V. Madhusudan Reddy, and Chhote Narayan Sharma used to visit Odisha on several occasions. Dr. Sukumar Chakraborty had visited once in connection with #WorldUnion. Babaji Maharaj's Ayodhya connection has many secrets of the future, hidden in its womb. Let's hope, in the dominant consciousness of the nation, Odisha comes to the fore.
