Philosophy as an activity for understanding life and the world has no other substitute nor any sign of finality. So identifying genuine efforts from fake, verbose, or agenda driven ones is very important.
A follower of Sri Aurobindo, however, has the advantage of not examining Aristotle, Kant, or Santayana in advance. One starts with the Veda (not in the ritualistic sense) and understands other things as affirmations or contrary opinions. SAVITRI, obviously, provides the final challenge.
