Avoiding over-promise

The Mother & Sri Aurobindo have made use of highly optimistic and inspirational language in their interaction with the disciples and correspondents. The Ashram also has been publishing excellent motivational literature by means of various publicity materials. Apposite extracts in prose or poetry accompanied by attractive pictures are mainstay of this method that involves superior designing, printing, and diffusion. Needless to mention that all these have been accomplished in the spirit of Aesthetic Yoga and the tradition continues.

No one can dispute the power of The Mother & The Master’s words but there is no gainsaying of some level of over-promise involved. Their eloquence, in a way, is utilized to camouflage the situation on ground, thus removing from focus issues of injustice and exploitation that should have received urgent attention or deserved to be acted upon. In other words, spirituality has often served as a pretext for escapism and spawned sycophancy. Ironically, the same level of noble nonchalance is never adhered to when one’s self-interest is under threat.

Dignified dispassion and indifference are surely high ideals but resorting to them indiscriminately in an imperfect world can be counterproductive. Likewise, not to speak of the present situation in our day to day language and invoke the phraseology of Supramental and Psychic Being turns deceptive as well as self-defeating. Opposing immoral and illegal practices is the duty of every citizen and more so for avowed spiritual seekers. Hence, strict vigilance is needed against employing seductive language and slipping into simulated indolence. [TNM55]

India in dire straits

There are no public intellectuals in India today since as soon as someone shows merit, he is co-opted by one political party or the other. Journalists graduating as MPs and Ministers has become common and most news-channels dish out party point of view. A few who look like independents operate clandestinely on behalf of some foreign lobby. The so called Civil Society sector is crowded by entities with uncivil intentions. On the whole, there is confusion all around.

The Democracy Industry in our country is in a formative stage. All are part of it, but no one understands its dynamics. Certain myths like justice, liberty and equality are given lip-service, but all know it's hypocrisy. Political parties find no compulsion to improve their functioning as long as they are part of the power game.

Words have lost their force. The magnitude of allegations traded day in and day out has gone up exponentially. White collar crime and white lies have become staple of the white elephant called bureaucracy. The robotic functioning of a dummy Prime Minister has robbed the Constitution of its lofty morals. Human Condition and Life Divine

[There are numerous reasons for Bergson's disappearance from the philosophical scene after World War II… Sartre and Merleau-Ponty became interested in Husserlian phenomenology, and then in Heidegger's thought… On the other hand, there is the mysticism of The Two Sources of Morality and Religion (1932). The striking religious tone of this book did not harmonize well with Husserl's phenomenology, which aimed to be a rigorous science.] Leonard Lawlor - Henri Bergson (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)

[Because of his Jewish ancestors, Husserl became more and more humiliated and isolated. In 1935 he gave a series of invited lectures in Prague, resulting in his last major work, The Crisis of European Sciences and Transcendental Phenomenology.] Christian Beyer - Edmund Husserl (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)

Two Sources and The Crisis are twin-towers of 20th Century as they contain the mature perceptions of two foremost thinkers integrating philosophical insights with sociological thought. Sri Aurobindo’s The Life Divine, too, appeared by the end of the same decade as also André Malraux’s novel The Human Condition (1933). SR/OOO is attempting to reinvent Bergson, Husserl, and Whitehead by presenting them in a different angle but a lot depends how it anchors the overall ontological scenario to human aspiration and destiny. Sri Aurobindo awakes us to the great mystery

The Post-Secular/Religious-turn debate as also the SR/OOO discourse are fertile fields for foregrounding The Mother & Sri Aurobindo and their versatile pronouncements involving Evolution, Consciousness, and its Transformation. But, regrettably, minds are as segregated today as they were in the days of Savonarola (1452–1498) or Bruno (1548–1600) and search for Truth, perforce, takes a backseat. Our role, however, is to repeat this umpteen times over the Internet with the hope that someday someone might find this clue useful for resolving his ontological perplexity as well as anxiety over past authority.

Sri Aurobindo liberates us from the tabula rasa approach and awakes us to the great mystery that we are born into, within and without. He hardly cedes any space to permit us speculate over such luxuries as whether God exists. These are, no doubt, presuppositions but help save us from a lot of vain intellectual struggle and emotional frustration. Even, Phenomenology speaks of the pre-reflective or the pre-intentional substructure and, thus, the epistemological implications of these assumptions cannot be dismissed outright. Sri Aurobindo has dwelt, at length, on the Logic of the Infinite and the fallacy of capturing supra-physical phenomena through physical senses.

The thought revolution The Mother & Sri Aurobindo demand from us is a colossal exercise, not to speak of the intellectual stain that their extensive writings inflict. Their philosophy, alone, can solve many of the maladies of the present world but most people pretend that Sri Aurobindo has hardly added any thing new to the perennial Indian wisdom. As a new Religion, too, a lot is to be gained by shedding millennia-old dirt and inculcating a rational culture. But for all this one has to read and read and there’s no short-cut. [TNM55]

Sri Aurobindo sows certitude

The FIVE DREAMS Manifesto of Sri Aurobindo broadcast just forty months before his passing away can well be read as a synopsis of his methodology. Although he characterises them as dreams, there seem to be a forceful pronouncement of his work as well as prophecy. Firmly cocooned within history, his project of the Life Divine privileges agency and practice of Yoga as much as the geographical India's primacy. Further, not only is he contesting the predominantly pessimistic sentiment of the Century, but also is offering a synthetic ontology bridging the immanent and the transcendent. The fetters of the human condition have, as it were, been cut asunder by him with The Mother's presence and grace providing an assured escape route. In an atmosphere of pervading deception and perversion one may temporarily feel despondent, but the quiver of certitude should never quit us. [TNM55]

In search of an integral Sri Aurobindo

J.N. Mohanty partly agrees in one of his Lectures (OUP, 2009) with Sri Aurobindo's interpretation of the Veda. Rajiv Malhotra quotes copiously from his works in Being Different in support of his thesis. Various facets of Sri Aurobindo are in focus these days but an integral representation of him remains a challenge. [TNM55]

Shooting arrows at Ramalgam

It is heartening to note that the ideological Ramalgam pursued by RSS-BJP so far is being subjected to critical scrutiny by their own young and astute sympathizers. In Secularism is Important to Modern India, for instance, Harsh Gupta @hguptapolicy inter alia avers, “The political philosophy of Hindutva is morally wrong, detrimental to the Indian national interest, detrimental to Hinduism, and politically counter-productive.”

Similarly, ThePragmaticIndian @Realist_Indian tweets 5h, “My views. State has to be secular. Don’t understand what Hindu Rashtra means.” These are, no doubt, refreshing perceptions that come from common sense and compassionate attitude. Interestingly, such views stand close to the vision of The Mother & Sri Aurobindo but, unfortunately, no one has read their works. [TNM55]
