Habermas, Taylor, Gregory, and Milbank

Many thinkers and authors don't become much famous during their lifetime but their writings become widely known afterwards. The name of Kierkegaard comes to mind in this context. Some writers give some extra importance to some philosopher or poet of the past resulting in a redrawing of history of ideas. Pfau highlighting Coleridge or Lilla recommending Rousseau fall in this category. Some others like Bellah focus on a certain period of time as crucial which necessitates thinking about the progress of history anew. Thus, it is essential for students to be aware of such lesser known facts.

In India, a narrative is taught in the schools that Mahatma Gandhi brought freedom. This is a clear case of disinformation and no particular remedy has been effected till date. Calling him Mahatma and the Father of the Nation also are contested, justifiably. Similarly, Ambedkar is accorded disproportionate respect by his followers without due academic rigour and comparison. It appears that no political party in India is interested in a sound version of history. Such a cavalier attitude is not good for developing necessary scientific spirit in the country, thus thwarting creativity. But expecting RSS, which is an epitome of rumour and falsehood, to take corrective measures is futile.

Attracting eyeballs and drawing attention space has become pivotal for modern economy and hence peddling lies has gained a new level of respectability. So, there is virtually nothing against which something can be checked for veracity or lack of it. As more and more people readily compromise with values, institutions, too, get corroded. Paid media is a stark reality now and so is the case with Universities and system of awards and honours. Although, this paints a bleak picture of the future of human civilisation, we must put our faith on Evolution which has its own logic and plan. [TNM55]

The lens of Western thought serves as a useful tool to understand the world around us and the mystery of our own existence. By yoking both science and mathematics to its advantage, speculative philosophy has traversed a long path in discovering new ways of looking at our place in the universe as well as the realms we carry within ourselves.

The word "spirituality" is used in a variety of contexts. But its most simple meaning lies in its literal sense, that is perceiving the spirit hidden behind the material world. Since time immemorial, seekers have aspired to break through the barrier between the visible and the invisible and have left behind their experiences for others to work upon, in different cultures and continents. The Oriental tradition, or especially, the ancient Indian wisdom, in this context, can be looked upon as largely revelatory in nature. While the Truth was disclosed at the very dawn of its civilization and various philosophies and systems of practice were formulated to attain the Truth, it has never been easy to bridge the gulf between it and the ordinary human experience. 

It is here that the new ways hewed by the Western philosophers comes to one's rescue. Without any pretension of leading one to Self-realization or a Divine-encounter, it takes the rational route and tries to clear the hurdles in seeing aright. Ramanuja, Dayananda, and Sri Aurobindo

Week-long cultural and entertainment bonanza opened downstairs last evening as part of 18th year Durga Puja celebrations. The hold of religion is so well-oiled that it's difficult to even think of for anyone its negative features that we discuss. Attended the IGNCA seminar on Ramanuja in the morning and the focus was on bhakti and service which lubricate religion. The speakers were emphatic how he secured philosophical validity for bhakti as if philosophy ended there. Silika presented her pre-thesis submission seminar on Object-Oriented Ontology today which is, of course, a matter of joy and pride. Let's hope that this latest stream of philosophy doesn't take the new converts for a ride.

The followers of The Mother & Sri Aurobindo, in this context, are lagging behind considerably. Every organisation is using modern management and communication techniques for involving more and more people but nothing comparable is being attempted by us. Thus, expanding religious modalities should be a priority so that the intellectual content can be fed in small doses in due course.

It is what is illegitimate to assert about her and in her name that concerns us foremost. Yet a corpus of collective experience in an Integral Psychology about what is possible and how, cannot but speak of her and must find the languages to do so. These languages may be impersonal, personal but ahistorical or personal and historical or all of these (as in Sri Aurobindo’s own case, in his varied narrations). But without this attempt, the formulation of an Integral Psychology will remain impractical and incomplete as a core possibility within the (post)-human. 

Sri Aurobindo is closer to modernity than Dante

Knowledge accumulation is an ancient enterprise which refuses to cease. But after so much of scientific and philosophical advancement our understanding of the outer Universe as well as inner universe can at best be said to be rudimentary. The contributions of The Mother & Sri Aurobindo are an authentic source but it is difficult to recommend them for assured result. In that sense, they belong to the realm of metaphysical speculation or poetic imagination. That said, it's profitable to turn to their socio-political ideas and literary-cultural output for educational purposes. This has, especially, assumed urgency in view of the Hindutva menace that we discussed in the last post. 

Mapping genealogical trajectories in Sri Aurobindo's oeuvre is a herculean task but highly rewarding and fertile field. That itself offers an intellectual journey around the world. Further, one finds him closer to modernity than say, Dante at whose time science was in infancy. Thus, Sri Aurobindo's relevance to current Indian scene is immense. Providing an alternative political ideology is still more potent than the pedagogical dimension. [TNM55]

Emerson admired Ram Mohan Roy

Hindutva, with its perennial agenda of "Kashi, Mathura, Ayodhya" and "Hindi, Hindu, Hindustan" has permanent enemies in "Gandhi, Nehru, Jinnah" and "Marx, Max Müller, Macaulay." Now that Modi has become mainstream, more and more people are finding such a narrative normal. However, the truth is different and has to be told over and over again. Emerson admired Ram Mohan Roy and played a stellar role in popularising Indian wisdom. Thus, recognising the role of the West in shaping the present day India is important. 

India suffered much under the Colonial rule, but how it has profitted in numerous ways can't be denied. The civilisational ramifications of East-West synthesis that it engendered is enormous. How to understand the world is a perpetual challenge and philosophy will survive because thinking doesn't require much material assistance.

Philosophical thinking is easy and comes naturally but is obstructed by the phalanx of history, economics, mathematics, politics, and poetry

Philosophy doesn't mean that one has to go through all that Aristotle or Abhinavagupta wrote, nor Russell's A History of Western Philosophy.

Thinking over ordinary topics like why gold is the least reactive metal or how much protein the body needs can lead to deep philosophy niche

Science, philosophy, and psychology are sisters but they no longer claim that they can make us understand the world, sometime in the future.

So each one has to fend for himself of herself when it comes to understanding the world as all that has been explained till now may be false

Thus, all the information one acquires through education or indoctrination need to be ruthlessly scrutinised and fictions, duly segregated.

This is not easy as mind keeps on churning fresh dishes kneading recipes from diverse sources from what is hidden in genes to even lightning

One may think of two sides of brain in this context but not with total dependence. Strengthening the philosophical recess however is crucial

Proverbs & folksongs contain philosophical statements or even newspaper headlines. An eye for such occurrences can cure long held prejudices

One can always try when awake or alert but mind has no control during sleep, dreams, pain, diseases or under the clutch of strong emotions.

On the whole though one's philosophical treasure can't assure unadulterated truth it would help in showing right direction and lighting path

Now the brass tacks: Which philosophy? Which text? Which interpretation? etc. A veritable maze but not impossible to cut through the clutter

Interesting that while writing a previous tweet, I have valorised two terms right and light quite normally as if they are self evident truth

That's a good start and we can examine one of them but let's take the pair together as a concession to left and right hemispheres of brain.

Both right and light are needed on utilitarian criterion and are associated with all that are considered as good and noble (two more terms).

So by taking up right and light not only we are considering their allied notions but also we have segregated their opposites. Seems complex!

A cursory glance however would confirm that right and light are almost universally respected and coveted across all religions and cultures.

Further, right and light with or without allied terms form some key concepts common to almost all streams of philosophy systematised so far.

Urge to turn what is not right to right or bring what is not in light to light is ordinarily considered not only normal but also a normative

Then the question arises why right and light are valued so much and what is the basis? And how we deal with them along with their opposites?

Here, one may remember the human rights and how they help to see the world in a different light. So right and light do have multiple layers.

Be it right or light apart from their extreme opposites a hierarchy of grades or levels till their perfection makes it a gradual progression
